What is the Leitner System

The Leitner System is a widely used method to efficiently use flashcards.
In the beginning all kanji are in group 1. If you give a correct answer for a certain kanji, it moves to the next group (e.g. from group 1 to group 2, from group 2 to group 3...) When you give a wrong answer for a certain kanji it is moved back to group 1 regardless of the group it is currently in (e.g. from group 2 to group 1, from group 5 to group 1...)
The advantage of this method is that you can focus on the most difficult kanji, which remain in the first few groups.

Remarks:
Every Kanji has two Leitner group numbers, one for recognition and one for writing. So if you set the Test Mode to a writing test the Leitner group number of the kanji may be a different one from when you select a recognition test.
The Leitner group numbers for recognition and writing are saved in a global list for each kanji (e.g. If “JLPT Level N5” is the selected kanji set and “円” is in Group 3, it’s also in Group 3 when “1. Grade” is the currently selected kanji set).
Also the dates of the last writing and recognition tests for each group are saved in a global list. So the last test dates for a group are saved separately for writing and recognition tests but not whether you did the Group 4 writing test with “JLPT Level N5” or “1. Grade”.

How often should you train each group

In general the lower the group number the more frequent you should train the group (Group 1 most frequent - Group 5 least frequent).
If possible you should train:
Group 1 - every day
Group 2 - every 2. days
Group 3 - every 4. days
Group 4 - every 8. days
Group 5 - every 16. days
