To get to the Import window use the import button in Settings -> Kanji Set




Here you can import your custom Kanji Sets. You can either just import a list of kanji. This allows you to learn a certain amount of kanji from your textbook or learn in a certain order. You can also import kanji with your own custom meanings. This helps when you speak a language that is not supported by the program (e.g. russian, italian...) or if you want to use specific keywords/translations for each kanji that differ from the default meaning of the program`s database.

To import your kanji set please follow the steps that are described in detail below:

Create a text file with your Kanji


Create a plain text file with the kanji you want to have in your custom Kanji Set. The text file must be a plain and simple .txt file no .rtf or .doc. It must be encoded with UTF-8 (most editors have this as an option if you use “Save As”).  You can for instance use the Editor in Windows or TextEdit under MacOS to create such a txt-file. Two basic formats are supported:


Kanji Only Format


The Kanji must be written in one line without spaces  or newlines.

Example: kanji_only.txt



Kanji + Meaning Format


Every Kanji is written in a new line. First character is the Kanji. After the kanji follows a “;” that separates the Kanji from it’s meaning (if you chose to insert a custom meaning). Multiple Meanings for one Kanji are separated by “||”.

In the example file the first 5 kanji (十 to 六) each have two meanings. The following 3 Kanji (五 to 三) have each one meaning. The last two Kanji (一 and 二) have no custom meaning, this means the program will use the default meaning from it`s internal database. You can mix between these three variants (no custom meanings, single meaning, multiple meanings) as you like. 


Your custom meanings are also imported into the default sets. This means if you import a kanji set where you specify the meaning of  “一” is “uno”. “uno” is the meaning for “一” in all program kanji sets that contain this Kanji like “JLPT Level 4” or “1. Grade”.


Remarks:

Program keeps the order of the kanji like in the text file.

The Kanji Set must contain at least 5 Kanji that are in the programs database.

The Kanji Set should not contain more than 5012 Kanji, which is the amount of Kanji in the programs database.

Upload the text file OR add via iTunes



Upload the file to a public webspace. I recommend the public folder of Dropbox. It`s easy to set up available for Windows, Mac & Linux and the Basic account is available for free. But of course you can use any other public webspace as well.


OR


If you have iOS 3.2 or newer you can also copy the files directly to on the device. Connect your device to iTunes. And select Kanji LS on the Apps Tab. Then just press the Add... Button and select the file you want import.







Import your Kanji Set into Kanji LS Touch



First you need to get the URL of your uploaded file. If you use Dropbox you only need to right-click the file in Explorer/Finder or whatever you use and chose “Copy public link” from the Dropbox entry. You can insert the link into the editor to actually see the link.




Insert the link to your file into the URL field and chose a name for the set that you insert into the Kanji Set Name field. Then press Import.

If you use Dropbox, there`s a shortcut (“d.”) for the first part of the URL you can use. Instead of inserting “http://files.getdropbox.com/u/1556555/sample.txt" you only need to insert “d.1556555/sample.txt”.



After you successfully imported the Kanji Set you can see it on the Kanji Set page.





Most common errors



  1. -iPod/iPhone has no internet connection

  2. -internet connection is too slow and the file download ran into a timeout

  3. -the syncing of the file to your public webspace is not completed (wait a bit and try again)

  4. -you misspelled the URL

  5. -you did not insert the complete URL (e.g. forgot “http://” or file ending “.txt”)

  6. -the encoding of your file is not UTF-8 (try again to save as UTF-8)

  7. -the file does not fit one of the two supported formats described above

  8. -you used the „kanji only“ format, but you or your editor added a new line at the end (some editors seem to do that)

  9. -file has less than 5 kanji

  10. -you used very exotic kanji that are really not in the programs database



Remarks

Backup (iOS 3.2 or newer)



You can backup your statistics, own translations and personal sets by using iTunes to save the settingsX.kst file. Connect your device to iTunes and Select Kanji LS in the Apps Tab. Select the settingsX.kst file (x stands for the version number) and press Save To...


If you want to restore your backup connect your device to iTunes and Select Kanji LS in the Apps Tab. Delete the current settingsX.kst file on the device (if there is one) and Add... the file you’ve previously saved onto your computer.


Remarks

There should always be only one settingsX.kst file on the device.

You can exchange these settingsX.kst files between iPhone, iPad, iPod.
